The goal of the educational field trip was to expose our Advanced Placement Biology students to a hands on real world lab experience. The Pathways to Stem Cell Science is a unique laboratory-based non-profit training institute. The lab offers real-world training in contemporary bioscience skills to students and early career scientists through innovative hands-on courses involving human stem cell This type of real-world training has profound benefits for the social, academic and technical development of students, fostering confidence and improved problem-solving abilities, while addressing the industries need for a trained laboratory workforce.
During this visit our students were trained in aseptic technique and worked with human testicular cancer cells. We heard an extremely informative lecture from Dr. Victoria Fox, who is a professor, researcher and innovative scientist of the Pathways program. Students also participateded in a discussion on careers in Bioscience. Dr. Fox debunked many myths regarding stem cells and imparted pertinent factual information to our young scientists.
