What happens when we flush?

Junior Sabrina Pelenghian commented,“The trip to Hyperion tied directly into what we are learning in the classroom. We need to think about reducing our outputs and moving toward living with sustainability in mind.” Most water can be used as reclaimed water; water that is not clean enough to be reclaimed goes to the ocean through a five mile pipeline running underground.

The Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant is located in southwest Los Angeles, California, next to Dockweiler State Beach on Santa Monica Bay. Hyperion is the largest sewage plant by volume, west of the Mississippi River.

Docent guides provided insight as to what happens when we flush our toilets and where exactly city street drainage systems empty out. Students then enjoyed lunch at one of our southern California piers.
